Long-term Cognitive Decline Seen in Older COVID-19 Patients

According to a study conducted in Wuhan, published in JAMA Neurology, long-term cognitive decline was found to be common a year after older adults were hospitalized with COVID-19 infection.

In 1,438 COVID-19 survivors discharged from hospitals in early 2020, the incidence of cognitive impairment was 12.45% a year later, reported researchers. Around 3% of the survivors had incident dementia and 9.1% were noted to have mild cognitive decline 12 months following discharge from the hospitals. 

In comparison with controls, SARS-CoV-2 infection was tied to a greater risk of early-onset cognitive decline after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), education level, and comorbidities, even among those with non-severe infection, with an odds ratio of 1.71… (Medpage Today)
